Nearly everyone has heard of the illustration about prioritizing - something along the lines of a professor with a jar, some big rocks, some stones, and some sand. The professor asks his students to get all of the items in the jar. After much trial and error, it becomes clear that the task is achievable only if the big rocks go in first, followed by the stones, and then the sand. The application is made that we must make space and time for the important things in life from the start.
Mark and I recently spent a late night doing a mid-year check of sorts and realized that we had to get our Big Rocks on the calendar before there just was no time left for them this year. We had some Stones that we needed to include that really couldn't happen until those Rocks were in place, and the sand of life was threatening to take up every little square on our calendar.
When all was said and done, there was a little more rigidity in the schedule than I would normally like summer to have, but I am hoping that holding fast for those Big Rocks will prove to be more rewarding than a loose five weeks that slip through our fingers.
