The day before he turned nine and a half, Toby came home from school, silly as usual. He bounced around the house and participated in every conversation with a wacky voice, worked on homework, ate a snack. reviewed his drum lesson. He put on his baseball uniform, grabbed everything he needed for the rest of the day, and hopped in the car for his drum lesson. He achieved his drum goals, was very excited about the next aspect he is working on with his drum set, and ate spaghetti and meatballs out of a thermos as we drove to his baseball game. He warmed up, stayed focused on the game, served as an even-keeled and strike-throwing relief pitcher, kept a good attitude about the home run the other team got during his time on the mound, and then headed home to finish his homework.
Pausing to reflect on Toby during his half-birthday week has reminded us of the maturity that has been growing, and it is a delight to count the fruit! He is responsible, intrinsically motivated, quick to see the good, always ready to celebrate. And he still gives great hugs.
Happy half birthday to our Joy Boy, Toby!
