Joy Boy 9.0

On the eve of a child's birthday, Mark and I will inevitably find ourselves leafing through the baby book.  The baby days seem so far removed, almost hard to remember - until we read the memories jotted down.

This cherub of ours is nine.  Halfway to adulthood, we were reminded.  (To be clear, it was not Toby that announced this fact; he happily wants to embrace his age right now and thinks being an adult won't be nearly as fun.)  Many of the things we noted in his baby book are still true today.  The toddler that took his time painting with water colors is the third grader who comes home and tells us every detail of his art class.  The 12-month-old who loved curry and spicy foods is the nine-year-old who thinks sriracha is a super condiment and Indian food is ideal.  The preschooler who would hear a song and quickly run to his little drum set is the elementary student who wakes up early to work on a new piano song.  His laugh is just as rewarding and bubbly and his eyes still twinkle when he is ornery.  We want to freeze time and hug him tightly today.  Happy ninth birthday, Joy Boy.  You are so dear to us, for exactly who you are.

One of his proudest art pieces to date.  His favorite artists right now are Ansel Adams and Dale Chihuly.
