It had been a hectic day - the kind when there are nonnegotiable tasks that must be completed despite a toddler's need for steady attention.
My tone of voice must have been going downhill, because suddenly there was my firstborn, offering to take J to the sandbox so that I could do some more focused work. And so I did, with this view from my kitchen window:
The next thing I knew, Toby was working out a schedule so that brothers could share both the responsibility and the free play. It was such a breath of joy - a chance to pause and be grateful for the leading example of Eli and the love these brothers have deep down for each other.
