Why Oscar Made Me Cry

When Ish was diagnosed with bilateral fibular hemimelia, we did what parents these days do - we googled it.

Having fibular hemimelia in both legs is very rare, but after some research, we found information on a real live person with the same diagnosis - Oscar Pistorius, now also known as the Olympic Blade Runner.

Oscar was born 25 years ago when the only solution to this diagnosis was amputation; yet the first two doctors who examined Ish felt the same way.  So when Oscar Pistorius ran that race and earned the respect of the athletes and the world, I cried.  What a hero we will be able to present to Ish when terms like fibular hemimelia mean something to him.  But beyond Oscar's overcoming spirit, his family who didn't baby him through his disability, and his overall tear-jerking story, I cried at the picture of what for Ishmael almost was but by the grace of God miraculously wasn't.

And then morning came, and our Rocket Man scooted down the stairs on his booty and ran into the kitchen on his own two feet.
