Just a week ago, Ish would say that he was "Mommy baby with binky". How he loved that binky. How concerned we were about him one day showing up to kindergarten with a still-going-strong pacifier addiction.
HOWEVER, today marks the fifth day of the pacifier-free life, and so far, none of us needs counseling. Who knew? And there weren't even any sneaky tricks- just logic with a child who is evidently quite logical!
Ish once had 3 binkies that he loved equally. But then there was a silly evening of hyperactivity, and only one binky remained. (FYI: Biting and pulling on these little rubbery things will create holes, and then the parents will declare them unsafe and send them to the trash.) From that day on, the other four indiansandpirates could occasionally be heard in rather sing-song fashion saying, "If you bite a hole in that one, there will be no more binkies."
Friday had been an exciting day at Papa and Mimi's house, and as the three boys were sprawled out on their three-in-a-row air mattresses that evening, there was a bit of hyperactivity. Which resulted in some binky carnage and a talk about how that was the last binky. The older boys made a happy to-do over Ish becoming a big boy, and (much to our surprise!) life somehow marched on with nights and naps on their normal course.
Every once in a while, Ish will still rather matter-of-factly mention his broken binky in Mimi's trash can, illustrating that he definitely understands cause and effect, choices and consequences.
Which means that in the future, we can resort to a well-worn strategy: the parental lecture.

(insert ominous foreshadowing here)
