You know that whole concept of it takes a village to raise a child? We're feeling it.
Earlier this year, our friend Jill let us borrow the book, The 10 Best Decisions Every Parent Can Make. Much later in the year, Steph actually completed it. One of the concepts discussed in the book involved spending quality time with your child before each school year to show love and to set goals/expectations for the year ahead. We liked this idea and stored it in the back of our minds, thinking that the week before kindergarten, we would get a babysitter for Toby and Ish and then take Eli out for ice cream.
Last Friday, our caseworker/friend Lisa sent an email mentioning a surplus of donated Pirates tickets for the upcoming Tuesday's game. Would we want any?
And suddenly, Eli's welcome-to-big-kid-life was quite the celebration.
Nana rearranged her work schedule so that she could stay with Toby and Ish. Steph's friend Anna graciously included a quick trip to WalMart in their hang-out-time so that Steph could get the suddenly-needed wallet for the discussion about the character trait (responsibility) that Eli would be focusing on in the coming school year. Mark's cousin Marcia and some of her family came down to join us at the game.
We left at 3:00 on Tuesday afternoon, surprised Eli by stopping at Dairy Queen to use his free ice cream token from the dentist (ironic, no?), and spent the three-hour car ride chatting about baseball, baseball, lighthouses, baseball, and responsibility. And then we celebrated the arrival of the first school year, baseball style.
We were able to stay for all 9 innings, get some take-home snacks from our favorite Cambodian restaurant, and stumble in the door at 2am with sleepy smiles on our faces. Great memories with a super kindergarten-bound boy.

| Of the 9 ballparks that we've visited, PNC Park gets most aesthetically-pleasing. |
